Crepes Gardens: How To Make A Water Feature

You guys!

As you know, I am very interested in gardening. I felt that my petunia section was lacking something, and so, with a little help from MomFOD, I installed a water feature to make things more interesting! My friend Nissy over at Nerissaslife.com asked if I would share my plan so he could make a water feature, too!

Here’s what the finished product looks like:

The mostly finished water feature.
The mostly finished water feature.

This is actually the MOSTLY finished water feature. After this photo was taken, we elevated the bucket a bit so you could see two layers and see the spray better on cloudy days. Here’s how we did it:

  1. MomFOD found a pot in the alley someone was throwing away. She took it home and got laughed at by DadFOD.
  2. After insisting she could make SOMETHING of this pot, MomFOD patched up the holes with some really strong glue then painted it with a water-proof rustoleum-like paint to protect the plaster that was visible.
  3. DadFOD helped MomFOD drill some holes into the bottom to let the water through from rain. Then MomFOD sealed the sides of those holes with some puffy gorilla-like glue to protect the pot.
  4. MomFOD used a plain old 5-gallon plastic bucket for the inside. She roughed it up with some course sand paper and then applied the same paint she used for the outer portion.
  5. We put the bucket inside the outer pot, filled it with water, and then placed two bricks inside of the same color for some height.
  6. We bought a solar-powered water pump online for about $15, attached that to the bricks, and adjusted the height and spray head. Then we ran the solar panel out to the sunniest spot for all-day sun. And there it is! Right near my delicious cat grass garden.

Now birds and other creatures have some water when they come visit, and I have something to look at!

PS. I am never left unattended with the water feature. Always attend your pets when letting them look at water features. That’s my PSA for today.

  • Making a garden feature is all about creativity and sense of design. Utilizing different type of manmade and natural elements in a way to come up with a great design completely depends on you. You must also have to take care about the space. Protection is also an aspect that should be cared on. I prefer Outdoor Living UK if I need contemporary and quality assured garden feature for my garden.

  • Crepes, my list of all your expertise on subjects and talents is filling an entire notebook! Seriously, is there ANYTHING you cannot do or know?! How do you deal with all the pressure to instruct the FODs in these activities?

  • Wow, that is so pretty. Mom would love a water feature, but Dad always vetoes her. Now she could maybe make one herself. Thanks for the instructions. He goes away for ten days next month. May be time for a Mom project. Kitties Blue are having a giveaway at The Cat on My head for an adorable, appliquéd kitty flag. • Oh wow. Oh wow-oh-wow-oh-WOW! That’s an AMAZIN’ water feature. I’m gonna get the peep right on that.

Question though. Do you think there’s any possibility that the pot your mum found was magic? I’ve heard of such things bein’ tossed out and then someone finds it and… well… Well then you’ve got a movie script on your paws, for sure.

Just checkin’ to see if the peep needs to find a magic pot or if she can use any ol’ pot. Yours looks so nice I’m thinkin’ it might be magic.

    • I’m pretty sure it was a plain old pot. We got two, actually. Both were damaged, and one had a dying tree in it. momFOD’s trying to save the tree, but it’s not looking good. She still has some hope, though.

  • That’s really cool! We didn’t know there was such a thing as solar-powered water pumps. Maybe we can get a water feature to look at in place of the hibiscus that the deer killed. The dead sticks aren’t much to look at right now.

  • Love that DIY fountain project you and your MomFOD completed – you appear to be keeping a very close eye on things out there Crepes….bravo….well done!!!

    Hugs, Sammy

  • That is awesome! Sadly, my human is totally un-handy with that sort of thing. Too bad you can’t make in Photoshop!
