Tuesday Haikusday: The Great Shed For Earth Day

You guys!

It’s that time again, the time of the year when all of us, as a unit, begin our great purge, our great cleansing, our spring cleaning where we donate our unnecessary coats to the world and coat our houses in homemade love glitter. It is time for The Great Shed. I will now wax poetic about this most important time of the year and then discuss some ways you can use The Great Shed to promote a better world for Earth Day. Eh hem…

Tumbleweeds of fur

in eddies of air.

.

Oh! Cat explosion

during dinner, lunch, and snacks.

Fur is all around.

.

Groom, lick, hairball. Ack!

Sorry ’bout your magazine.

And your left shoe, too.

,

Since today is Earth day, I would like to offer some suggestions on how to combine it with The Great Shed.

Here are some thoughts on how you can use your unneeded fur:

  • Give it to birds to make nests. Groom it off and throw it out into the wind!
  • Collect it and make small effigies of the pets it came from.
  • Stuff it into pillows (or blankets if you have a giant dog)
  • Take it camping and use it for insulation and kindling
  • Make mustaches and sell them to costume shops and under-employed actors/musicians

What other ideas do you have for Earth Day?

Love,

Crepes.

PS. Alana here. Please don’t do any of those things Crepes suggested with fur. It’s very silly and I don’t know any actors or musicians who would wear those mustaches, not even me. The birds are probably the only ones who might appreciate some fur for their nests.

In all seriousness, Earth Day is important! Please take a moment today to consider what you can do to make our Earth a better place to live. In an overcrowded world, we all need to pitch in because the little things will add up. Some things I would like to suggest are:

Our newest Fig tree next to our three year old potted evergreen.
Our newest Fig tree next to our three-year-old potted evergreen.
  • Cut up your six-pack rings so animals don’t get caught in them. A few snips can save lives (sort of like neutering your pets!)
  • Turn the water off while you soap up your dishes and only let it run while you rinse.
  • Refuse bags at the grocery store if you can; use the ones you do take to clean litter boxes and walk your dog instead of buying specially-made ones
  • Don’t fertilize your lawns, ESPECIALLY if you live near a pond or other water source. The excess nitrogen gets into the water and causes all sorts of issues that require more chemicals to stabilize.
  • Plant a tree, even if it’s a small one! We just planted a small fig tree in a pot, and we have a little evergreen and a maple in pots on the balcony. Every bit helps.
  • Experiment with gardening, even if it’s only in a container. Grow some food for yourself to help ease the burden on the food system.
  • Use bio-degradable cat litter, like the kind you can flush down the toilet. It’s better for your kitties and the world!

What will you do to support Earth day? Let us know in the comments!

  • Fur makes for great compost material for those of you who have a compost pile/bin.

  • You both have some great ideas. We already use bio-degradable cat litter (toilet flushable) which is wonderful for both the environment and for eliminating that ‘nasty’ kitty litter smell in the house. Happy Earth Day!

  • Homemade love glitter!! Brilliant!! I agree with the other commenters, Crepes. I was REALLY enjoying your ideas. Devon and I recycle, and do a lot of repurposing of objects. We also cut open non-recyclable bags before we throw them away in addition to snipping those drink-pack rings. P.S. Let us know when you get those Crepes finger puppets finished

  • I liked Crepes ideas too. Alana you had some wonderful ideas too. I try to reuse and recycle everyday. I have been spring cleaning and I always try to donate or recycle. Happy Earth Day.

  • I cut up the plastic rings from my pop cans, and have for years after I read as a teenager an article showing a picture of a baby bird whose beak was clamped shut by one- that’s all it took and I’ve never forgotten that photo.
I recycle all my plastics, glass, boxes etc. and would not mind having a Crepes fur mustache- it would be pawesome to wear on Halloween! MOL!

  • Happy Earth Day! And our mom does put our furs outside for the birds to use for their nests…so Crepes did have some good ideas!

  • You guys are great. And those are all excellent suggestions 🙂 We do a lot all year, but today is always special.
    Hugs you guys!

  • Great ideas Crepes…..my Mom does put my furs from brushings out on the deck and the birds come get it to line their nests. We do the plastic 6-pack snippy thing too! Planting in honor of Earth Day is a tradition around here….my parents are off to the nursery this morning to find something NEW for our yard.

    Our Earth is special
    Treat it with kindness always
    We are SO lucky……

    Hugs, Sammy

  • Like everyone else, we kind of thought Crepes had some good ideas. In fact, Zoey has so, so much fur … the hu-mom (who is now turning grey!) has thought to save it, turn it into a lovely long braid and add it to her own thinning-greying hair! A good idea? Ah well …
Anyway: Crepes’ hu-moms ideas are purr-fect and truly the way to go. If we all do just one more little thing each day, or two more little things … what a difference we can make …

  • I think that Crepes had very good ideas, but Mum’s prefers Alana’s one, even if she already practices it almost every day. It’s a question of point of view… Purrs

  • Cinco and Manna thought that Crepes had some really good ideas. They were just about to go throw some fur over the balcony to the geese below when I caught them. We do our part to recycle, reuse, and repurpose things. 🙂
