The Crepes Case: The Succulent Murders

Ladies and gentlemen of the furry jury,

Today on The Crepes Case, I’d like to present to you all of the evidence I have gathered in the case of:

The Succulent Murders

Crepesdetective

The Crime: One peaceful winter day, with Spring just appearing in the air, MomFOD decided to start getting her plants ready for outdoor life. When the ambitious aloe plant pupped, she split it up into new pots, eight of them, in fact. Springy, green, and healthy, those aloe plants didn’t stand a chance with their tasty looking little bits. They were hunted down, systematically, one by one. Murder was attempted. They weren’t the only ones; the spiny succulents that had outgrown their pots were also on the perp’s radar.

The Perp: No perpetrator was found on the scene, merely a felled aloe plant, its sandy, dry soil haphazardly spilled across the floor. And then another, and another. This wasn’t an isolated case. This, my friends, was a cereal murder (though no pops, puffs, or smacks were harmed in the making of this case.)

I demand justice and will stop at nothing!
I demand justice and will stop at nothing!

The Search: I carefully cordoned off the crime scene and inspected it for finger prints. After a thorough dusting, I found nothing out of the ordinary.

The Crime Scene.
The Crime Scene.

The Verdict: I blame The Succulents themselves. If those little jerks didn’t look so wiggly and fun, nothing would have happened to them. They were asking for it. Asking for it, I tell you! And they got it, good! MomFOD has jailed them, with a sentence of three weeks to life. I’m going to keep an eye on those succulents.

Justice has been served.
Justice has been served. They’re in the Big House now. (Actually, the Big House is a lot smaller than I expected)

What do you guys think? Those succulents deserve to be jailed, right? Or MomFOD wouldn’t have done it! Yeah, I thought so.

Love,

Crepes.

NOTE FROM MOMFOD: Aloe Vera plants, although beneficial to people, are poisonous to cats and dogs, according to the ASPCA and other sources. I was keeping some aloe plants to overwinter in an area of the house where the cats couldn’t reach.Β  After I repotted them, I left them on the table for a short period and they were knocked over by Crepes, who refuses to admit it was her (me think she doth protest too much). I found a plant case at Ikea for less than $20 and have now securely locked up the aloe plants.Β  If your cat ingests aloe, watch for vomiting, depression, diarrhea, anorexia, tremors, and change in urine color. Contact your vet if you suspect aloe poisoning. Visit the ASPCA’s poison page for more info.

  • Crepes this could all be the work of the succulents conspiracy it is good that they are being watched real close now so no cat can get hurt.

  • I did not know that Aloe plants were poison to cats etc. Good to know. Good thing the Mom put those plants in a cage. Hope all of you have a great day. Thanks for the good info.

  • Our Mom used to have tons of plants–before we came along–and they were put in jail, too. It was either us or the green things! She decided her gardening efforts should be limited to landscaping around the house and a few veggie plants, too.

Mom told us to thank you for the info on aloe. She did not know it was toxic until about a month ago. And then she freaked out when she saw it listed on the hairball chews she had been feeding us. She had doubled the dose because the vet said it was okay to do that because the suggested dose was not working on her longhairs. The manufacturer said it was safe if used as suggested. Question for you–Why put crap you know to be toxic in anything? Needless to say, she will not purchase that product again.

    • I honestly couldn’t say why. I know that in large doses garlic is bad for cats and dogs, as are onion, but many foods use garlic under the working assumption that it is actually beneficial in small doses as an antiseptic/antiparasitic. I’m not sure on the aloe, though. I may have to do more sleuthing! – Crepes.

  • Reporter, interviewer, writer, advoCAT, actress, producer, and now detective too?! Crepes you never cease to amaze me with your talents. Thanks to the MomFOD for the info about aloe, I was not aware it was poisonous to cats and dogs. I have one in the house, but luckily my mancat and dog are not plant eaters so I’m not too worried, but I will make sure to watch where it is placed from now on just to be safe.
I believe in the justice system of innocent until proven guilty, so I suggest you say nothing without a lawyer present. For all MomFOD knows a neighbor’s cat could have snuck in through the door fast without being seen, and been the one to knock over the plants… I didn’t say they DID, but they COULD have. Just sayin’.

    • I aim to please. πŸ˜‰ – Crepes. ps. I mean, not please TOO Much. that would be uncatlike.

  • Those aloes got the right punishment. How dare they hang around waiting to get some innocent kitty into trouble.

  • Ummm… has Crepes been teleportin’? I ask ’cause just recently, we had a little ‘incident’ with a pot of plumeria. Knocked right over. I think it’s the SAME PERP. If so and Crepes has NOT been teleportin’, CREPES MUST BE INNOCENT. And I MUST INNOCENT, TOO!

  • Crepes, those succulents were DEFINITELY asking for it. They shouldn’t have been parading themselves out in front of you like that, taunting you. Glad they got jailed!

  • They must be in cahoots with my spider plant…all those little babies dangling over the side are also asking for it!

  • Uhoh…….I say thumbs down for the succulents….they were out in the open and vulnerable to attack and is there PROOF that they were deaded by a cat? No! It was an assumption…….OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!

    Hugs, Sammy

  • Oh, those plants totally deserved it! My human never grows any because she knows that if we didn’t kill them, she would!

    • We had them around for a long time without realizing they could be poisonous, especially when they’re so beneficial to us! – Alana.

  • Thanks for the info about aloe. If Crepes needs a good cat lawyer, I know one. He’s Junior, the son of Midnight the Rescue Panther on fb πŸ™‚
