Put Your Pet On A Pot!

You guys!

I’ve been in exile, but that doesn’t mean I’m cut off from the world. I received a nice email introducing me to a neat project I wanted to share with you. Also, I really like saying “Put your pet on a pot” and doing this post allows me to do that repeatedly. Please welcome Chris from CrazyCatLadyCeramics.com, a small endeavor that puts your pets on pots and gives 5% of everything they make to no-kill charity efforts.

Crepes: Welcome, Pot People! Let me clarify for my readers that, in essence, your business allows people to send you photos of their cats and have them put on a pot. Or a cup. Or mug. Is that correct? Dogs too?

Pot People: Yes, that’s the essence. We take people’s photos of their pets and a quote about them and put them on mugs, plates, and bowls. We also sell our dishes with our 4 “crazy cat lady” cats on them.

C: That would be Monkey, Push Push, Bull Bull, and Baby Jesus. Continue.

PP: Additionally we sell food and water dishes and crazy cat lady magnets. We put any type of pets on pots. Cats, dogs, chickens, horses, goats, bunnies, gerbils, anything you love, we put it on a pot!

C: Do you hand make each piece of pottery yourself?

PP: Yes, either Me (Chris) or Shelly ( the other crazy cat lady) hand make everything ourselves. We hand throw, hand glaze, and hand apply and print the images to all the pots ourselves. Every piece is totally unique and made with love, care, and maybe a little cat hair too.

C: The best things ARE made with cat hair, especially sandwiches. Tell us a little bit about the process of making a cereal bowl.

PP: We make two sizes of bowls, large and small. The smaller size would be a more healthy cereal portion. However, if you wanted to pig out and dive in, the large bowl is perfect.( Monkey and Push Push prefer large.) There are several steps in making one bowl so I will try and not make it sound too complex. First, we hand weigh all the clay out, a large bowl is 3 pounds.

C: That’s almost half my body weight. Go on.

PP: Then we throw it on the potters wheel. After it has dried a bit and we can safely turn it over, we trim the bottom of the bowl to create the foot.

C: Oh man, if only it were that easy to make ME a foot! Tell me more.

PP: Then we wait a few days for it to totally dry out so there is no more water in it. Then we put it in the kiln for its first firing to bisque it (so the glaze will stick to it).

C: That sounds delicious.

PP: After the first firing we can glaze the bowl with our Kalays cream glaze (a glaze we make ourselves and its named after a sweet puppy). Then the bowl goes back in the kiln for the second time to get really hot to melt the glaze. At this point we take a photo of a furry and photoshop it on the computer and hand draw a “crazy cat lady frame” around it and sort out the words. The we can prepare it to print and turn it all into a decal. We print the images and text on to a special paper so we can put them on the bowl. We hand apply the image and text making sure the furries look their finest. Then the bowl goes back in the kiln one more time for its 3rd and final firing. After that its ready to be used and you can chow down on all the cereal you want.

C: You should sell a deluxe model that comes with cereal in it. Why did you start doing this?

PP: We started doing this for several reasons. Firstly because we are obsessed with our cats! We have so many photos of them everywhere and constantly talk about them that it just seamed natural for it to gravitate on to our pottery. Also, we started making a set of dishes when our dear sweet kitty Bull Bull passed away. We were so upset over his passing, we wanted a way to share his legacy with the world. We are both passionate vegans too and have been trying to find a way to help as many other animals as we can for years. Sadly, as artist/potters we have been really struggling financially to get by and just take care of our own kitties. So this seemed like a wonderful way to help our babies and other furries. We really want to help as many animals as we can and help people celebrate the love and joy pets bring to our lives.

( I want to give away lots of balls cause those are my favorite things ever.) I am not sure how my mama feels about this. Thanks for the furry love!
